CATSKILL – Not to be outdone by their neighboring city across the river, Catskill held its first-ever village-wide holiday celebration on Saturday, December 5. “A Day in December,” the Daily Mail reported today, featured activities, shopping and entertainment for all ages, including a performance by the Zucchini Brothers and a showing of The Grinch That Stole Christmas at the Community Theater on Main Street.

“Parents brought their children downtown to take pictures with Santa and for sleigh rides down Main Street,” writes Doron Tyler Antrim. “The day also featured bicycle and sled giveaways at the Catskill Village Police headquarters, sponsored by Sawyer Chevrolet… Many of the vacant storefronts on Main Street were put to good use as housing for the day’s vendors, which were selling holiday ornaments and goods, as well as specialty products.”

This September, Prometheus Radio Project and WGXC will hold Prometheus’s 12th community radio barnraising. Radio barnraisings are weekend-long radio and movement-building events. Individuals from the local community, participatory media advocates, and artists from around the country will converge in Hudson, NY to share ideas, experiences, and skills in the launching of WGXC’s full power community radio station.

“For the past ten years, we’ve been fighting to take the airwaves out of the hands of the powerful few and place them in the hands of communities. We’ve supported many groups in starting low-power and full-power FM radio stations that serve as tools for social justice organizing and a voice for community expression,” says Andalusia Knoll, Community Radio Coordinator with the Prometheus Radio Project.

The Prometheus Radio Project has helped many groups, including farmworker unions, civil rights groups, and rural arts organizations build their stations while training a new generation of radio organizers across the country. The collaboration with WGXC, which will broadcast at 3,300 watts as opposed to the 100 watts of low power stations, will be Prometheus’s first full-power barnraising. This new station will be uniquely decentralized with three main studios spread out across the listening range, allowing broader participation from residents of New York’s Greene and Columbia counties. Partnerships are already forming with schools, music venues, and town halls to create live feeds from various locations, furthering the scope of the station.

WGXC: Hands-On Radio will be much more than just a radio station, with regular exhibitions and events, ongoing media trainings, a news blog, and community meetings. “We are all aware of the urgent importance of protecting and supporting our local resources, food system, watersheds, farmland, and local arts and cultures,” explains Kaya Weidman, a member of WGXC’s Radio Council and co-founder of Germantown Community Farm. “WGXC is simply local media, a key tool for all these crucial issues.”

The WGXC Prometheus Barnraising will take place in Hudson, NY with workshops and events from September 24-26. To register for the Barnraising go to http://www.prometheusradio.org/WGXC_barnraising

Registration is now open!

* LOCAL REGISTRATION: Local registration is open for folks attending the WGXC barnraising who live in Greene, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Albany, Rensselaer, or Delaware counties in New York or Berkshire County in Massachusetts.

* GENERAL REGISTRATION: If you do not live in one of the above counties, please go the general registration page.

From Matthew Lasar in Radio Survivor:

The Prometheus Radio Project will run its 12th community radio barn raising by launching a new station: WGXC in Hudson, New York on September 24-26. This is the first such event, however, that will involve setting up a full-power station—3,300 watts as opposed to the usual 100 watts of low-power FM. “This new station will be uniquely decentralized with three main studios spread out across the listening range, allowing broader participation from residents of New York’s Greene and Columbia counties,” says Prometheus. “Partnerships are already forming with schools, music venues, and town halls to create live feeds from various locations, furthering the scope of the station. WGXC: Hands-On Radio will be much more than just a radio station, with regular exhibitions and events, ongoing media trainings, a news blog, and community meetings.” The station already streams at www.wgxc.org. We tuned in and, no big surprise, got a Gamelan tune from the composer Pauline Oliveros and the Berkeley Gamelan Ensemble. If you want to help out and live in Greene, Columbia, Dutchess, Ulster, Albany, Rensselaer, or Delaware counties in New York or Berkshire counties in Massachusetts, click here to register. June 12: Parade
Max Goldfarb’s Mobile49 (M49), a functional-symbolic emergency vehicle, will engage with the Hudson Flag Day Parade spectacle on Saturday June 12, 2010 (http://hudsonelksflagdayparade.com/). Central to Deep Cycle, the M49 will be a motorcade participant, displaying newly-completed customizations for mobile, solar-powered transmission, and towed by oxen along the parade route. Additional performative elements will be presented from the vehicle throughout the parade. Viewers are invited to experience the parade on Warren Street in the City of Hudson at 2 p.m.

June 13: Procession
After appearing among the fire brigades and marching bands of the Flag Day Parade, the Deep Cycleproject will unfold along a carefully established path constructed around a stretch of Route 23 from Hudson to Cairo, NY. Deep Cycle threads together a constellation of area-specific performance incidents using the truck itself as a framing mechanism and as an instrument for articulating the work through low-power radio transmission and web streams. The program ties together conditions, histories and interpretations of sites that are not conventionally or geographically associated as a function of its mobility. Thematically; consumption, waste, destruction and transformation are at the core of Deep Cycle’s narrative.

November: Publication
Texts, transcripts, drawings, photographs and more will be included in the subsequent book to be completed Fall 2010.

WORKSHOPS

Making radio: real live tools for real local radio
Meet upstairs in the barn.
From asking good questions to pressing the right buttons, we’ll be producing some short interviews and field recordings while engaging the skills needed to make radio that really represents. Dharma Daily and Emily Bennison will share their expertise and lead us through.

Joining the airwaves: The WGXC radio station “barnraising”
Meet downstairs in the barn.
Capacity Building for Community Building:
WGXC community radio is really rolling. The station launch date is set for late September, and Prometheus Radio Project has chosen us to collaborate with to produce a huge event called a Radio barnraising. Radio barnraisings are weekend-long radio building and movement building events. Individuals from the local community and participatory media folks from around the country come together to share ideas, experiences, and skills in the launching of a community radio station. This is an extremely exciting opportunity for those interested in community radio to get involved and get trained! Come find out more about this event, see a couple short films of other barnraisings, and become a part of making it happen. Cory Fischer-Hoffman of Prometheus Radio Project and Kaya Weidman of WGXC: Hands-On Radio will guide us through.

Food and farmland access
Our regional resources and strategies meet by the tables or in the house
With Ashley Loehr of Fog and Thistle CSA and some other farmers.

Farm Tours

Meet by the washstand next to the barn.
Cruise around the property with the farmers here on the land and hear of the successes, as well as the trials and tribulations of the soil, the seasons, breaking new ground, marketing, and various earthly forces that affect what they grow, how they grow, and what happens.

Labor of Love: get yer hands dirty!
Meet at the greenhouse.

With the farmers: Don’t feel like going to a workshop, and just want to get your hands in the dirt? Luckily, there’s plenty to do! Come see the glamorous side of farming by picking rocks and planting potatoes, and help the farmers enjoy the party by getting some big work done.

Dick May practiced some citizen journalism at the April 26 Catskill Village meeting, forcing the town trustees to go on the record with their decision to move the July 4 fireworks from the Hudson River waterfront to downtown Catskill. He writes, “the Trustees of Catskill Village almost made a controversial decision by stealth. And they made a decision without making a case.” And then recalls the manner the decision was announced.

“After that business had been well under discussion, a spectator (this correspondent) ventured to ask whether the Board had made a decision on the fireworks launch site. Mr. Seeley acted surprised—as if the answer was evident from the trustees’ remarks. The Trustees then proceeded to resolve formally that the July 4, 2010, fireworks shall be launched from a “downtown” site, ‘yet to be determined.’ That resolution did not stem from anything remotely resembling a systematic or comprehensive cost-benefit analysis. The Trustees acted without affirming, much less determining, that the change of launch sites would be popular, would be economical, would produce a net gain of public safety, would enable the fireworks to be more spectacular, would make the viewing population bigger, or would produce an increase in local business. Didi Barrett

WGXC's Kaya Weidman records NY State Senate candidate Didi Barrett at Hudson Children's Book Festival.

Just as WGXC’s Kaya Weidman was about to sit down and interview Fidel Mareno, who was going to talk about Native American rights and the American Indian Pow Wow Aug. 14 in Stephentown, Didi Barrett showed up. We had asked the Democratic candidate for New York State Senate representing Columbia and much of Dutchess counties (a seat held by Republican Steve Saland) to stop by our table in Hudson High’s gym, but everyone arrived at the same moment, and then a recorder failed. Indeed, it was a whirlwind day with so many folks stopping by the WGXC table at the festival, which was even busier then in its first year. Eventually we got another recorder working, and a conversation between Barrett, Mareno, and WGXC staff ensued about absentee voting, Native American rights, and other issues.

From From Gail Heinsohn in The Columbia Paper:

As he stated he would at the April 5 town board meeting, Lebanon Valley Speedway owner Howard Commander has filed suit against town officials, seeking a state Supreme Court determination as to whether the campers parked on his property trigger state requirements for a campground. The effect of the lawsuit, according to town Zoning Enforcement Officer Stan Koloski, is to stay the town’s efforts to enforce zoning restrictions that the Zoning Board of Appeals believes apply to camping at the racetrack. Francesca Olsen in the Register-Star reports:

For four days in July, the site of Meadowgreens Resort will become a haven for metalheads — if the event coordinator satisfies all permit requirements from the state and the county. Planned for July 15-18, Metalfest 2010, presented by Total Music Television and GSR Holdings, Inc., will be a “European style heavy metal music festival for eastern New York Metalheads.” The event, according to a proposal sent to the town of Ghent, will include two stages and 50 national and regional heavy metal bands, as well as a “vendors’ village” and European and American food vendors. Tickets run from a $35 day pass at the gate to an $800 VIP ticket for all four days, with camping extra. But at the county Board of Supervisors’ Public Safety Committee meeting April 22, a group of law enforcement and public safety officials expressed concerns about the event being so close to the county airport, and wondered if K. Randeze, the CEO of GSR Holdings and the coordinator of the event, would complete all the necessary permit documents in time for the festival. Read the entire article in The Daily Mail.

Thom Lail

Thom Lail performing at soundBarn.

The Albany Sonic Arts Collective (ASAC) and The soundBarn host River of Drone II: Seven Hours of Sound from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 16 at the soundBarn, 330 Maple Lane, in Valatie. A very special, long-form event, River of Drone II is a free, seven-hour, improvised sound performance with peaceful soundscapes and full-on noise, the ever-shifting rhythm, pace and mood will evolve as the ebb and flow of performers, energy and instrumentation progresses through the seven-hour performance. Set in a former orchard cooler with views of the Catskill Mountains, The soundBarn is a uniquely suited location for visitors to lounge, listen and linger for an hour, a few minutes or the entire performance. The audience is encouraged to make themselves comfortable and to bring pillows, chairs, food and drink. Unlike a traditional concert setting, performers will be located throughout the venue and listeners are encouraged to move around, watch the accompanying video projections, wander in and out and discover new relationships to sound through immersion, reflection, deep listening, meditation, and concentration. Featured musicians include: Jason Cosco, Matt Ernst, Tara Fracalossi, Eric Hardiman (Rambutan, Century Plants, Burnt Hills), Ray Hare (Century Plants, Fossils From the Sun, Burnt Hills), Holland Hopson, Thomas Lail (soundBarn), Patrick Weklar (soundBarn), Matt Weston (Barn Owls), and many more special guests, with videos by Tara Fracalossi, Kyra Garrigue and others. Albany Sonic Arts Collective is a grassroots organization located in and around Albany, NY. The soundBarn is a project of artist/musician Thomas Lail and artist Tara Fracalossi and is located on what was once Heald Orchards in Valatie, New York. The soundBarn is sited in a modern addition to the orchard’s 100-year-old Dutch style barn. The cavernous, heavily insulated space served as the orchard’s cooler where apples and pears were over-wintered and chilled by the massive, still-visible refrigeration system.

Fran Heaney of the Chatham Courier reports that PS/21 requested Special Use Permit for permanent use of their temporary tent at a Jan. 28 Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, as they do not have the $11 million needed to construct a sound proof structure. Located on Route 66, the cultural center has hosted classical music and other events since 2005 at a 50 decibel sound level at the property line, well below the town building code sound level of 90 decibels, and much quieter than the lawnmowers run by the neighbors who are complaining about the sound. Those neighbors filed an Article 78 lawsuit against Chatham after the town approved PS/21′s plans in 2005, and a judge dismissed it later that year. The ZBA meets next Thursday, Feb. 25 for another public hearing about PS/21′s Special Use Permit.
