There will be a lot of talk this week on WGXC about books as the annual Hudson Children’s Book Festival is Saturday. For the third year in a row, it will bring together the Hudson Valley’s best authors for children at Hudson High School. Today, Tue. May 3, on “The WGXC Afternoon Show,” Ann Forbes Cooper and Richard Roth will speak with children’s animator and musician Tony Caio, creator of “The Rattles Band,” and children’s author Barbara Lehman. Both will be at the Hudson Children’s Book Festival too. Also in Hudson book news, the Hudson Area Library‘s staff and Board of Trustees are now writing book reviews. WGXC/WORD! show kicks off the WGXC/Prometheus Radio Project Station Barnraising Friday night with free admission at 7:30 p.m. at Cannonball Factory, 359 Columbia St. in Hudson. Celebrating text+sound and word+music. Curated by Lee Bradshaw, Jeffrey Lependorf, Sam Truitt, and Chad Weckler.

WGXC: Hands-On Radio, a new community radio station serving Greene and Columbia counties, will soon go live. On Friday, September 24, WGXC and the Prometheus Radio Project present an evening of free performances kicking off the WGXC/Prometheus Radio Station Barnraising (September 24-26). Drawing on the high concentration of literary and musical talent in the area, WORD! pairs some of the counties’ most lauded writers with exceptional musicians and electronic soundscapes. The collaborations created for WORD! celebrate the magic of spoken words with music and the power of the sung word. These include everything from “Baconist” Paul LaFarge reading to the sizzling sound of frying bacon and poet Rebecca Wolff reading along with the haunting vocals of Lady Moon (Ngonda Badila) to short story virtuoso Nelly Reifler reading with Japanese bamboo flute master player Jeffrey Lependorf and multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Rob Caldwell playing along with readings from Finnish poet Catharina Gripenberg and Catalan poet Gemma Gorga Lopez. These collaborations and others will be followed by a musical set featuring some of the hottest urban sounds around, including hip-hip legend Sean Delaney, R&B
sensation TIMOtion, and the luscious pop vocals of Anneice Cousin. Throughout
the evening, performance artist Kathe Izzo—The Love Artist—will appear “unbound.” The evening can also be heard on www.WGXC.org.

The complete list of performers: Robert Caldwell, Cooga, Anneice Cousin, Sean Delaney, Denero Man, DW Gibson, Catharina Gripenberg, Dave King, Paul LaFarge, Jeffrey Lependorf, Rachel Levitsky, Gemma Gorga Lopez, Lady Moon, Phil “The Guitar Man,” Nelly Reifler, Julian Seidenberg, TIMOtion, Sam Truitt, Van Diesel, Rebecca Wolfe, plus The Love Artist “Unbound.” More information: 518-291-WGXC

From Sam Truitt:

Soldier Mountain Workshops announces the July launch of writing groups for Mid-Hudson Valley veterans. Meeting for 12 weeks into September, the writing groups in Catskill and Hudson are free and open to all veterans. The aim of the Soldier Mountain writing groups is to provide veterans an opportunity to give voice to their lived experiences through poetry and writing. Here veterans in collaborative settings will impart and bear witness to their unique lives as well as their visions of service and country. While seeking to foster living connections and personal exploration, the writing groups will explore the craft of poetry making and provide tools for building a sustainable writing practice. Handouts, notebooks and other necessary writing group materials will be provided. The writing groups may include guest presentations from local veteran writers. While veteran participants can choose to share their writing only within the groups, there may also be opportunities for reading their work to a broader audience. The writing groups will be facilitated by Sam Truitt, founder of the Solider Mountain Workshops. Sam Truitt is the author of Vertical Elegies: Three Works, Vertical Elegies 5: The Section, Anamorphosis Eisenhower, and the forthcoming Vertical Elegies 6: Street Mete. He is the recipient of a 2010-2011 George A. and Eliza Howard Fellowship, Fund for Poetry grants, and the 2002 Contemporary Poetry Series Award from the University of Georgia, among other professional acknowledgements. Sam Truitt holds an MFA from Brown University, and a PhD from SUNY-Albany, where he teaches, as well as at Bard College. For more, see www.samtruitt.org

Didi Barrett

WGXC's Kaya Weidman records NY State Senate candidate Didi Barrett at Hudson Children's Book Festival.

Just as WGXC’s Kaya Weidman was about to sit down and interview Fidel Mareno, who was going to talk about Native American rights and the American Indian Pow Wow Aug. 14 in Stephentown, Didi Barrett showed up. We had asked the Democratic candidate for New York State Senate representing Columbia and much of Dutchess counties (a seat held by Republican Steve Saland) to stop by our table in Hudson High’s gym, but everyone arrived at the same moment, and then a recorder failed. Indeed, it was a whirlwind day with so many folks stopping by the WGXC table at the festival, which was even busier then in its first year. Eventually we got another recorder working, and a conversation between Barrett, Mareno, and WGXC staff ensued about absentee voting, Native American rights, and other issues.
