Shearwater perform Sun., Feb. 26 at Helsinki Hudson, in a partial fundraiser for WGXC. From Wikipedia:

“Shearwater is an American indie rock band formed in Austin, Texas in 1999[2] by Okkervil River members Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff, although Sheff is no longer with Shearwater.

Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff, who began their collaboration as members of the critically lauded Okkervil River, founded Shearwater in 2001 as an outlet for quieter songs on which the two were working. The band’s name comes from the shearwater, a tribe of seabirds related to petrels and albatrosses. Meiburg, who holds a master’s degree in geography with a focus on ornithology, picked the name mostly for the sound of the word.

Shearwater’s debut, The Dissolving Room, introduced Meiburg’s now ex-wife Kim Burke on upright bass; shortly after, drummer and vibraphonist Thor Harris joined the band.

The addition of multi-instrumentalist Howard Draper plus tours and support dates with The Mountain Goats, Akron/Family and Blonde Redhead brought them exposure. Shearwater developed their music through several initial albums such as Everybody Makes Mistakes and Winged Life, as well as the Thieves EP.

In May 2006, Shearwater released their fourth full-length album, Palo Santo, to much acclaim from critics and fans. On April 10, 2007, Shearwater, then signed on Matador Records, re-released a 2-disc edition of Palo Santo with bonus and re-recorded tracks from the original album.

Matador Records released the album Rook on June 3, 2008. On the tour that followed, Shearwater opened for Clinic and later Coldplay. Additional touring accompanists were added at that time: Jordan Geiger of Hospital Ships and Minus Story(on cornet, synthesizer, and percussion) and Kevin Schneider of Black Before Red (on keyboard, bass, and guitar) replaced Howard Draper.

On February 23, 2010, they released their sixth album, The Golden Archipelago, which the band produced with John Congleton. The band toured extensively behind the record in 2010, with an international tours in the spring (with Wye Oak and Hospital Ships opening) and additional U.S. dates in the fall (with special guest Damien Jurado). Longtime live accompanists Geiger and Schneider notably did not come along on this tour.

On November 6, 2010, the band released an instrumental album, Shearwater is Enron, via their BandCamp site. The album was recorded in the spring of 2010 and includes live material recorded at a performance under the pseudonym “Enron.” It introduces some textures not traditionally associated with the band, such as electronic drum tracks and squalling guitar rock. Members of Wye Oak and Hospital Ships assist on the live tracks.

The band recorded a new album in 2011, released as Animal Joy on February 14, 2012.”

Rem Koolhaus, from Wikipedia.

Alexandra Peers in New York magazine is reporting that the architect Rem Koolhaus will design and construct artist Marina Abramovic’s Center for the Preservation of Performance Art in Hudson. Abramovic bought the former tennis building in Hudson at Columbia and 7th Sts. “The Serbian art superstar will seek to raise $8 million to pay for the project, she revealed Tuesday night to a group of art collectors at a panel at Manhattan’s tony Core Club, and the museum will be devoted to performance art pieces of ‘six hours minimum.’ Some of them will go on for days,” the story says. “Hudson, New York, and the surrounding region southeast of the Catskills, is already something of a serious art-world hangout, with several expat galleries in town.” Read the full story in New York magazine.

Tom Casey reports in the Register Star the Hudson Common Council is considering how best to fund a proposed expansion of the senior addition to the city Youth Center. The center is located at Third and Union streets on the city’s south side. At its informal meeting, Mon., Feb. 13, the Council considered a proposal directing that money from the general fund be used to cover an estimated budget overrun of $130,000. Council President Don Moore said use of the general fund was preferable over other forms of financing if the project expansion is approved. The decision to expand the original plan and add a second floor to the new wing of the center will be made at the Council’s formal meeting, Tues., Feb. 21. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Premier Brands of America, a national store brands manufacturer, packager and marketer of health and beauty products, is coming to Hudson, according to a statement released by the Columbia County Industrial Development Agency, Mon., Feb. 13. The Mount Vernon-based company is expected to purchase and renovate the 70,000-sq.-foot building located at 128 N. 2nd Street, site of the former button factory. According to the IDA, “one of the factors that made the vacant building attractive is its proximity to an existing available workforce allowing city residents to walk to their site of employment.” Premier is expanding and is expected to hire at least 25 new employees in Hudson. “I am pleased that the city, county and IDA came together to work hard in getting a new business to an area where it is much needed,” said Patrick Grattan, Chairman of the county Board of Supervisors.

Audra Jornov reports in the Register Star about Didi Barrett’s campaign stop at Club Helsinki, Sunday, Feb. 12. The Dutchess County resident is the Democrat candidate in the March 20 special election to fill the New York State Assembly seat formerly held by Marcus Molinaro. Rich Wager is the Republican candidate, and also a Dutchess County resident. A major challenge: Many voters are unaware the special election is scheduled. Barrett told the crowd Saturday, this is “like a school budget election; the only people who will come out and vote are those who care enough….” Barrett’s priorities include a focus on economic development via mandate relief and aid to local farmers, job development, and relief from various unfunded mandates. Jornov writes that Wager “is focusing his campaign issues on changing the culture of state politics and relief on taxes for the district’s small business owners.” Read the full story in the Register Star.

Design plans for the $8 million project were approved in June 2011. Read the full story in the Register Star.

Tom Casey and Jeff Alexander report in the Register-Star that the county is not renewing its option to buy the Wal-Mart on Fairview Ave in Greenport. Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Patrick Grattan, R-Kinderhook, told the Register Star that, with a Sunday deadline looming, none of the other supervisors had contacted him about renewing the option. The County was considering relocating county offices to the building including the Department of Social Services offices. The DSS building, at 25 Railroad St., is currently undergoing an environmental review. Former County Chairman Roy Brown expressed dismay that the Board will have spent upwards of $150,000 looking to keep Wal-Mart as an option, and $1.2 million on the purchase of Ockawamick, without arriving at a solution. The Ockawamick school in Philmont was purchased by the county for $1.5 million in 2008 as a prospective new home for the county Department of Social Services. Hudson’s former mayor and current supervisor, Rick Scalera wants to keep the department in the city and told the paper 25 Railroad Ave. was more than adequate to house DSS long-term. W.T. Eckert in the Register Star writes about the eighth annual Winter Blast, the benefit held over the weekend for the Columbia Memorial Hospital and Kaaterskill Care Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. The benefit at Helsinki Hudson raised over $100,000 in ticket sales for the hospital and rehab center. The event featured ten silent auction items that ranged from a week-long stay at a private, five-bedroom African estate overlooking the Indian Ocean, and ballooning over the Hudson Valley for two, to a private “hawk walk” at Talons in Earlville, with an overnight B&B stay for two. The Glen David Andrews Band, a New Orleans jazz group played music late into the night. Columbia Memorial Hospital President Jane Ehrlich said the funding will go toward improvements in the nursing home and projects in the hospital that include expanding the psychiatric unit with a goal to offer private rooms for patients. Super Bowl Sunday will be a busy day local bars and restaurants feeding hungry football fans and the Register-Star’s John Mason does a round up of what’s on tap in the area. Melino’s Pub, the 60-year-old bar on upper Columbia Street in Hudson, has 16 TVs to watch the game on; two of them have 82-inch screens. Angela’s Pizza and Pasta in Greenport offers three different game day family packs, with pizza, wings, garlic knots, salad and soda, depending on the package. They also have a three-foot sub, which needs to be ordered a day ahead of time, and family-style dinners to go. Don Conte of Bubba Bean Barbecue, at 93 Union Turnpike in Greenport, tells the paper his place has “the best (chicken) wings in the area.” He’ll be selling them until 6 p.m. Sunday, and then close down for the game. M.J. Sports Bar & Grill, 34 Hudson Ave., Chatham, sells seats to a private party. A ticket buys a designated seat for the game and an all-you-can-eat buffet that includes steamed clams, shrimp cocktail, chicken wings and homemade 18-inch subs. M.J.’s boasts 11 TVs, but as of Tuesday, there were only four seats left, out of 70. Park Falafel and Pizza, 11 N. Seventh St., Hudson, offers its own Super Bowl catering package, including 60 falafel balls, a quart of Jerusalem salad, a pint of humus, two pints of other salads, tahini dressing and 20 pita halves.Since it’s the 46th Super Bowl, Park Falafel is offering a cheese pizza for 99 cents more to the first 46 people to order the package. Lagonia’s on Main Street in Philmont, will be doing takeout — wings and pizzas — and people can come by to watch the game on the 50-inch screen.

The candidates are in place for the special election for the Assembly seat in 103rd district, which Marc Molinaro vacated to take up a position as Dutchess County executive. Both candidates are Millbrook residents. Didi Barrett will be the Democratic Party’s candidate, and she will face GOP candidate Richard Wager in the March 20 special election. Parry Teasdale previews the contest in The Columbia Paper. Barrett is a member of the Millbrook Education Foundation and helped launch the Dutchess Girls Collaborative. She is currently a board member of the Anderson Center for Autism Foundation and the North East Dutchess Community Fund. Wager is a former aide to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He was chosen over two other GOP candidates including former Assemblyman Pat Manning. The 103rd Assembly District takes in the city of Hudson and the towns of Ancram, Austerlitz, Canaan, Claverack, Copake, Ghent, Greenport, Hillsdale and Stockport in Columbia County and 12 Dutchess County towns, including Red Hook, Milan, Millerton and Pine Plains and most of the eastern side of that county stretching south to the Putnam County border. The majority of the population in the 103rd Assembly District lives in Dutchess County, where registered Republicans have a plurality. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.

Scenic Hudson has secured a conservation easement that protects 72 acres of land next to the Olana State Historic Site. The land resides on a hilltop overlooking the Hudson River in Columbia County. Scenic Hudson has been working to protect the views from the home of renowned 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Church. The conserved land offers views of the distant Catskills and is adjacent to the 95-acre Pleroma Farm, where Scenic Hudson also holds a conservation easement.

Two anonymous donors helped the Hudson School District meet a goal to raise $100,000 to create an endowment for the Hudson Schools Arts and Humanities Fund. The fund is one of six such funds the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation launched over the last ten years. The Foundation received an anonymous check for $25,000 in December topping off a fundraising effort that had been underway for over a year. Berkshire Taconic’s consultant Jeffrey Levitsky, who administers the fund, said the check was a terrific vote of confidence, “in the power of the arts and humanities to bring inspiration and hope to the students of the Hudson public schools.” For more information on the program, to apply for a grant, or make a donation to the fund visit the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s webpage: www.berkshiretaconic.org
