Super Bowl Sunday will be a busy day local bars and restaurants feeding hungry football fans and the Register-Star’s John Mason does a round up of what’s on tap in the area. Melino’s Pub, the 60-year-old bar on upper Columbia Street in Hudson, has 16 TVs to watch the game on; two of them have 82-inch screens. Angela’s Pizza and Pasta in Greenport offers three different game day family packs, with pizza, wings, garlic knots, salad and soda, depending on the package. They also have a three-foot sub, which needs to be ordered a day ahead of time, and family-style dinners to go. Don Conte of Bubba Bean Barbecue, at 93 Union Turnpike in Greenport, tells the paper his place has “the best (chicken) wings in the area.” He’ll be selling them until 6 p.m. Sunday, and then close down for the game. M.J. Sports Bar & Grill, 34 Hudson Ave., Chatham, sells seats to a private party. A ticket buys a designated seat for the game and an all-you-can-eat buffet that includes steamed clams, shrimp cocktail, chicken wings and homemade 18-inch subs. M.J.’s boasts 11 TVs, but as of Tuesday, there were only four seats left, out of 70. Park Falafel and Pizza, 11 N. Seventh St., Hudson, offers its own Super Bowl catering package, including 60 falafel balls, a quart of Jerusalem salad, a pint of humus, two pints of other salads, tahini dressing and 20 pita halves.Since it’s the 46th Super Bowl, Park Falafel is offering a cheese pizza for 99 cents more to the first 46 people to order the package. Lagonia’s on Main Street in Philmont, will be doing takeout — wings and pizzas — and people can come by to watch the game on the 50-inch screen.

Two anonymous donors helped the Hudson School District meet a goal to raise $100,000 to create an endowment for the Hudson Schools Arts and Humanities Fund. The fund is one of six such funds the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation launched over the last ten years. The Foundation received an anonymous check for $25,000 in December topping off a fundraising effort that had been underway for over a year. Berkshire Taconic’s consultant Jeffrey Levitsky, who administers the fund, said the check was a terrific vote of confidence, “in the power of the arts and humanities to bring inspiration and hope to the students of the Hudson public schools.” For more information on the program, to apply for a grant, or make a donation to the fund visit the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s webpage: www.berkshiretaconic.org

The site was turned over to National Grid an hour later, who set about replacing a pole. Power was out to the surrounding area for several hours while the pole was replaced. State Police are investigating. An update to the story says Young’s car was totaled, and that she was examined at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson and his fine. Lenny Kravitz’s longtime producer, Henry Hirsch, turned an 1869 church into a recording studio. Members of indie bands Vetiver and Buke and Gass are now Hudsonians.” It leaves out others such as Alexander Turnquist, Bunnybrains, and Liv Carrow. Read the full story in the Albany Times-Union.

Jeff Alexander reports in the Register-Star on the swearing in of Hudson’s new Mayor, William Hallenbeck. The new mayor was sworn in Sun., Jan. 1, in front of a capacity crowd at City Hall. Hallenbeck praised his predecessor, Rick Scalera, and also his opponent, Nick Haddad, for running a tough campaign. The city is in contract negotiations with the Department of Public Works and the Police Deptartment. Hallenbeck told the paper those negotiations and job creation would be his two top priorities once taking office. November’s election was close, with the Democrats first insisting on an absentee ballot count and then challenging the counting method. Hallenbeck, a Republican, has appointed a Democrat, Gene Shetsky, to be his aide. Read the full story in the Register-Star.

Jim Planck reports in The Daily Mail about a region-by-region report on the effects of climate change in New York. Columbia University, the City University of New York, and Cornell University were involved in producing the large study for the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The report concludes that New York State’s climate is changing and divides the state up into seven regions. The study examines the impact of climate change on water resources, coastal zones, ecosystems, agriculture, energy, transportation, telecommunications, and public health and recommend measures for remediation. The report concludes that region #7, which includes Columbia County, will likely see a steady increase in precipitation in the future. It also contains a warning for communities, like Hudson, that rely on a single stream for much of its water. “Only six water supplies in the state appear to rely solely on a single small stream,” it says, noting that two of them are local — the City of Hudson and the Village of Saugerties. “Without secondary sources,” it states, “these run-of-the-river systems with small drainage basins are considered to be at risk for occasionally running out of water under conditions of climate change.” Read Planck’s article in The Daily Mail<./a>

The U.S. Department of Education awarded the Hudson City School District a $400,000 “Promise Neighborhoods” grant recentkly. The program aims to improve educational outcomes for students in distressed urban and rural neighborhoods. The Federal program was based on The Harlem Children’s Zone, a national model that ties social service programs and educational institutions into a supportive web designed to carry children in poverty from “cradle to college.” Non-profit Organizations, including faith based organizations, are eligible for the grants. Scott Waldman in the Times-Union reports that the Catholic Charities Diocese of Albany will head a group of community organizations working with the Hudson city school district to determine where services overlap. More than 230 groups across the country competed for the grants. Only 20 of them were awarded funds on Monday. Read the full story in the Albany Times-Union.

Lynn Sloneker at Unmuffled reports how the Audra Jornov-penned story in the Register-Star posted Monday evening falsely reports that a Hudson principal’s racial discrimination complaint against the Hudson City School District and its Board of Education was “unfounded” according to the New York State Division of Human Rights. “In fact, the Division of Human Rights rendered no such opinion, and the process of adjudicating the complaint has barely begun — the district has yet to file a formal answer to Spicer’s allegations, according to statements made by HCSD Superintendent John F. Howe, Monday,” Sloneker reports. The report that Jurnov says comes from the Division of Human Rights is actually from Delmar attorney Ira Lobel. “Lobel was contracted November 14, upon the recommendation of the district’s labor attorney, Stuart S. Waxman, of Donoghue, Thomas, Auslander & Drohan of Hopewell Junction,” Sloneker writes. “He was brought in to sort through the ongoing dispute between district administrators that led to allegations of racial discrimination, and the filing of a formal complaint with the Division of Human Rights…. At the [school] board meeting Monday [Dec. 12], Howe acknowledged the report was completed. He said Lobel’s findings would be ‘incorporated into the board’s formal response [to Spicer's complaint]….’ and subsequently filed with the Division. The district has until Friday to file that response, Howe said,” Sloneker writes. So, the district is clearly still preparing a response to the lawsuit. In the Register-Star, Spicer is quoted saying: “With the exception of the pay issue and the district’s response to my receiving offensive e-mails, the report did not deny that any of the acts of discrimination happened. Mr. Lobel, the writer of the report just found the acts more of a result of ‘sloppy administration,’ than racially motivated discrimination,” Spicer wrote in an e-mail with Jornov, reported in the original story, which WGXC reported first without Sloneker’s corrections. Read the the Register-Star story here and Unmuffled’s correction here.
UPDATE: At 11:42 a.m. Tuesday the Register-Star retracted the story:
“EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story stated that New York State Division of Human Rights declared Steven Spicer’s complaint of racial discrimination unfounded. This is incorrect. It was the Hudson City School District’s internal investigation that was completed. The results of that investigation were that Spicer’s complaints were unfounded. The state’s investigation is still ongoing. We apologize for the error.”
The newspaper has kept the original, incorrect story online for Google searches to find.

Barbara Reina in the Register-Star reports that the Columbia County Historical Society has come into a trove of historical documents, dating back to the 18th and 19th Century. The Society’s curator Diane Shewchuk said the archive of 160 yellowing documents includes records of local mills and taverns, in Kinderhook, Chatham Center, Hudson and Valatie. A collector in Albany apparently notified local historian Ruth Piwonka that the archive was available. The Columbia County Historical Society then purchased the material with a small grant from the Kinderhook Bank. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
Some Hudson residents have raised concerns about the ongoing demolishing of a building on the corner of Columbia St. and North 3rd, where Columbia St. is blocked. The city has posted signs warning about asbestos nearby. WGXC’s Noah Reibel found Hudson’s Code Enforcement Officer, Peter Wurster, at the site and asked him why the City felt the building, at 255 Columbia St., had to come down now. PLAY CLIP
